Hey! My name is Tom. I am from southern Vermont. I have been a builder for decades. Gave it up about ten years ago, dumped most of my collection, and have been sorry ever since. Even though my eyes are getting terrible, and the fingers don't work like they used to, am back at the bench again. Am going to TRY to post some pics of some of my past builds. The first is a White 3000 made from an old resin cab from Rick Manz, and a kitbashed White Mustang engine. The next is an Autocar /Challenge mixer that was run by a company near me for years. It was a yard truck, but I built it as it MAY have looked when new. All wheel drive and a kitbashed Detroit 12v71 engine, Mark Savage tires. The next is a Mack R700 that was used by a company I used to work for. I actually rebuilt the real truck, and painted it as the replica is done. The hood is the master, by me, of the R700 hood Bob Sniegowski (?) of Illini Replicas used to offer. It also has a few kitbashed details, and Savage rear tires. The last is my latest efforts, at getting back into the hobby. It is a CO 4090 IHC, with the Detroit 12v71, and a winch body. LOTS of work left to do on this one, as it is just in mock-up stage right now. Hope to enjoy this place as I just found it today. Cheers, Tom

Thanks guys. The ONE thing I've NEVER been able to do is build ANYTHING right out of the box. I just could never do it. Gotta do something different. So, I don't build a great number, but they are a bit different. Thanks again for having such a great site. Just found it last night. Love it already. Ad soon as I get the use of my right hand back, it'll be back to the bench again. Love this place! Tom

The one good thing I did when I stopped building, even though I sold off about 1000 unbuilt truck kits, was to save about 100, and about 200 pounds of truck parts........kits I had disassembled over the years. Like having a junkyard in my cellar, in 1/25th scale.

I'm not only glad that you're back to building, but that you've found us. Your work is amazing.

I thank you very much for the good words, but I have seen here, in the very short time I have belonged, much nicer work than mine. ALL of you guys are amazing! Wish I had a place like this ten years ago, as I may have never taken that ten+ year vacation!

Tom, Welcome to the Forum. I for one am glad to see another model builder return to the bench . From the models you posted, I can see you are very talented. And I am very interested in seeing your current project as you finish it up. I certainly hope you will take some in progress pictures!

Gator,
I used to think of myself as a mediocre builder, but since I have been away for so long, I am afraid I have lost a lot. But, I hope it's like riding a bike.............you never forget. I just got going again a short while back, but had a problem with my thumb, so after surgery am sidelined again for a bit. But I still can do little things. I simply can't believe how much I have missed the hobby. And I WILL keep in progress pics coming. Just don't hold yer breath.....................I ain't the fastest by ANY means. That Autocar took about a year, the White about the same. The R-700 mack was a three year project, as I am never happy with the results and kept "adjusting" it for that perfect look. (And I worked on the real truck so it was easy to keep perfecting it!) Now, I have to clean up the old builds too, and get them looking right again. I have great memories of going to the Toledo NNL meets with many of my builds. Saw some great work there by many super builders like Francois Spenard(?), Mark Savage, Gary Johnson and other people who could work miracles. Hope to get to that level someday! Cheers!

Welcome!!! Excellent work on your trucks. I remember the people you mentioned as builders, especially Mark Savage.
I noticed your White cab was a Rick Manz cab. Was it a very thick cab made with a red resin filled with flour? I have a few of his cabs, they were so bad to work with! Yours looks great.
This site does tend to get you excited about building and has given me many helpful hints and build ideas.

Hi Tom - I am especially partial to the Mack R as I road tested in an R600 for my commercial licence back in the early 90's. Seeing your model brings back memories. A kindred spirit - I have the same "problem"! (and I'm not the fastest builder either.......) One of our fellow members is organizing a model car & truck show in Utica first weekend of April, would be great to see those trucks in person. rustycab.proboards.com/thread/9378/spring-thaw-show

Robert, yup, that cab was a disaster. It looked SO good in his ad, but in person, left JUST a bit of a challenge to getting it usable. It was THICK THICK, but after making a WHOLE lotta dust on the floor and all over my shop, it was what you see now. It actually looks lots better than I ever thought it was. Had lots of what I call grapes and pinholes too. But, heck, it's he only White 3000 I've ever seen outside of a diecast one. The engine is close to what it looked like in photos, so, it is a neat build. Always wanted to build a vintage lowbot with a single axle and beavertail and a scratch built Galion roller. Got the roller part done, then kinda just lost track. But, now that I have more time on my hands, maybe......!

R Nagle, I would love to attend that show. Haven't been to a show in, well forever. Am afraid that my builds wouldn't look as good as you think they may in person! (And they need a LOT of refurbishing in the body shop at this point). But, my first grandchild is due a week after, so am gonna have to stick closer to home, just in case. But, PLEASE keep me posted as to future shows, and I would love to attend. As long as they don't interfere with our gun show schedule, (I run a gun shop and do a lot of shows), I can't think of a better thing to do! As soon as the cast is off the paw, it's back to the bench.

As soon as the cast is off the paw, it's back to the bench. Tom, If there is anyway you can go to that show. I would strongly recommend going.Even bring a couple of your trucks. You might be surprised and pleased at the reaction from your fellow modelers. Go just to meet the people and look at their work and show yours. When it comes to building model trucks or cars, I am not fast and I am not slow, I am just half fast!!! Never been much of a competitor as far as the models go. Yes I have entered contests and even picked up a couple of trophy's. I would go to the events just to meet people and get ideas. For me model building is fun and relaxing, and about meeting people who like the same subjects. It is not about trophy's and politics, getting published in a mag. or any of that. But it is nice if it happens. Being retired and living in the Philippines presents a different kind of challenge to my building. The availability of some of the aftermarket items. Being on a fixed budget can be a real drag when it comes to my models. But I hang in there and try to plan ahead as to what I will buy. Hey it is only a hobby, enjoy and have fun and don't sweat the small stuff, life is too short! Be Well Gator

Gator, if my grandson arrives early, I sure will go. But, family first! I used to go to the NNL shows in Toledo every year, and did some local shows. Had a few pics in the hobby mags, and had an El Camino in Car Modeler. Yeah, that's neat, but the friends made are FAR better. If I can't make this one, there will be another. Heck, as a nine year cancer survivor, it's one day at a time for me now! Live large! Cheers, Tom

Well, got the cast off my hand and am re-habbing now. getting a BIT of motion back. Am not up to a full build yet, but the old R700 needs a refurbishing, so have started on that. Gotta clean the old girl up a bit. Will post some in process pics soon in the Work In Progress section.
